About Bournemouth Avionics

Bournemouth Avionics Ltd was founded in 2004 when the managing director (Brian Cook) decided to break away from his current employer. Based on his longtime service within the Royal Naval Fleet Air Arm, (1983 to 1999), the company aimed to provide good quality avionic support for GA as scheduled, unscheduled and installation services.

Bournemouth Avionics began life as a mobile service initially in a blue 2004 Citroen C3! Brian would spend his evenings and weekends in the garden workshop and office building looms and completing the obligatory admin a small business owner is always swamped in. This left his weekdays crammed with travel across the south of England and beyond, completing installs, defect rectification and plenty of radio annuals.

Soon Bournemouth Avionics Ltd was becoming a well-known name within the avionics and GA engineering community and eventually outgrew its set up and an arrangement was struck with the Goodwood estate and Goodwood aircraft engineering to install an office/workshop alongside the main aircraft engineering hangar at Goodwood aerodrome (see picture). This enabled Brian to work on aircraft with the added benefit of a workshop onsite and also enabled work to take place inside the main Goodwood engineering hangar when necessary. Soon after a second building was installed to further expand office and storage space.

As time went by the need to expand and increase capacity became the catalyst for a fresh relocation for Bournemouth Avionics. So in 2012 we made the move 25 miles down the coast to Solent Airport Daedalus (formal RFA Daedalus), somewhere brian new well form his days in the fleet air arm. 2 New portable buildings were purchased and set up on the Northeast apron. With the airport’s hard runway, Bournemouth Avionics could ensure customers access all year round, something not previously guaranteed with Goodwood’s grass runway. The penultimate move was to two WW2 hangars on the southeast apron, we gained the added benefit of offering aircraft storage and an undercover working environment to further increase capacity and continue our growth.

Solent airport has seen major regeneration in the last few years, so in May 2018 we made our final move into two brand new hangars on the northeastern corner of the airport. With 12,000 square feet of clean bright workspace, this represented a major upgrade from our ever so slightly leaky 1940’s hangars.

As of 2021 Bournemouth Avionics employs 10 people, however remains a family run business. Without any doubt, Avionics will always be the company’s speciality, however, in the past few years, the company has been able to expand the services it offers.
