Bournemouth Avionics Est. 2004
Welcome to Bournemouth Avionics! We’re a family run business that has been providing top-quality avionic support for General Aviation (GA) since 2004. Our journey began when our managing director, Brian Cook, decided to break out form his current employer. Based on his long time service within in the Royal Navy the company aimed to provide good quality avionic support for Generl aviation as scheduled, unscheduled and installation services.
In the early days, Bournemouth Avionics operated as a mobile service, with Brian working tirelessly out of his trusty blue 2004 Citroen C3. During the week, Brian would travel extensively across the south of England and beyond, completing installations, rectifying defects, and conducting radio annuals. This meant he would spend his evenings and weekends in the home workshop and office (a shed of his own design) , meticulously building wiring looms, whilst also tackling the never-ending administrative tasks that come with running a small business.
As his reputation grew within the avionics and GA engineering community, Brian soon outgrew his mobile setup. An exciting opportunity arose, when he struck an arrangement with the Goodwood estate to set up an office/workshop right next to the main aircraft engineering hangar at Goodwood aerodrome. This provided Brian with convenient access to aircraft both inside the hangar when needed but also right outside the workshop door. To accommodate his expanding operations, he later added a second building for additional office and storage space.
However, as time went on, Brian realised the need for further expansion and increased capacity. In 2012, he made the decision to relocate 25 miles down the coast to Solent Airport Daedalus, a place Brian was familiar with from his days in the fleet air arm. He set up two new portable buildings on the Northeast apron, taking advantage of the airport’s hard runway. Despite his love for the working environment at Goodwood this was a significant improvement and ensured customers could access BAL’s services year round. Soon after, BAL’s capabilities where enhanced further when the move was made into two hangars on the southeast apron, this meant aircraft storage could be offered and BAL’s growing workforce could work in a sheltered environment.
Solent Airport has experienced significant redevelopment in recent years. In May 2018, we made our final move into two brand new hangars in Faraday business park on the northeastern corner of the airport. With 12,000 square feet of clean and bright workspace, it was a major upgrade from our previous slightly leaky 1940’s hangars.
Currently, Bournemouth Avionics employs a team of 10 dedicated individuals and remains a family-run business. Avionics will always be our specialty, and we take great pride in providing exceptional services in that field. However, over the past few years, we have been able to expand the range of services we offer, ensuring that we can meet the evolving needs of our valued customers.
